About Us

Working with our communities to enhance the effectiveness of pretrial bail release

Turning Leaf Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity and seeks to sponsor a pretrial bail release system based on a public-private partnership. Funding for this pretrial support system will be from the defendants, indemnitors and supplemented by public and private donations. Costs for breaching the surety agreement, such as failing to appear in court, will be guaranteed by the indemnitors under existing bail laws.

Turning Leaf will act as a service navigator to help defendants qualify for public and private aid as well as leverage support from the defendant’s social network. The supervision of pretrial defendants will focus on skills-building and training through our service providers, community service, particularly for homeless and other at-risk populations.

Our Purpose

Turning Leaf is designed to help the families help the defendant. We want to give a voice to the families trying to care for these defendants.

We help defendant’s victims, and their loved ones find public and private support for circumstances that led to arrest such as making sure that defendants address any substance abuse and mental illness problems with medically appropriate services. We help defendants and their families sustain their job and life and assist them in navigating the criminal justice system.

We seek to improve the criminal justice system by maintaining an incentive-based system of surety bail that begins rehabilitation the first day after the arrest. We provide supervision and support during the critical period between a defendant’s arrest and their trial.

We provide the Court and prosecution reports regarding the defendants’ progress and incentivize defendants to work to pay restitution to any victims.

Our Approach

We seek to maintain an incentive-based bail system  that allows defendants to maintain employment or if not employed, engage them community service projects.

We provide an ecosystem of family-oriented support services that facilitates reconnecting criminal defendants with their own social network and community so they can re-integrate into society and minimize homelessness, loss of employment or other crisis-inducing situations.

We promote an incentive-based support system of bail that leverages a defendant’s motivation to stay out of jail. Defendants agree to a custom rehabilitation plan aimed at helping them become productive, law-abiding, and thriving members of society.

We connect indemnitors of defendants with Mentors so they can support each other in their joint mission of helping the defendant turn a “new leaf.” Our network of multicultural Mentors from existing rehabilitation and charitable organizations provides support services to Mentors and indemnitors to monitor, organize and, if necessary, surrender defendants back to court.

We organize educational and social gatherings to educate and connect defendants and their families with existing charitable and rehabilitative programs to help them during the critical and risky pretrial period to facilitate rehabilitation.

We work together with law enforcement and the courts to establish processes and procedures for the release of defendants. Utilize the best parts of the private pretrial release system to incentivize defendants to get the treatment they need at this opportune moment when they are highly motivated to turn their lives around.

We provide the court defense attorneys and prosecutors with information and reports about defendants and their progress, including a first appearance report. Reports regarding the defendant’s appearance and recidivism, and other requested information by public entities will be provided in regular reports.

We cooperate with academic research facilities to document and improve rehabilitation techniques. Create a forum for sharing and refining the processes to keep defendants in their social networks.
